“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”
2 Corinthians 9:15 KJV
Have you ever been just speechless? Perhaps someone did something nice for you, paid you an unexpected compliment, or gave you a gift you weren’t expecting. As your heart filled with gratitude and your eyes filled with tears, your heart seemed to rise up in your throat…and you were without a way to express your thoughts.
When my niece gave birth to her youngest child, I was in the birthing room. In awe, I watched as that seconds-old baby boy took his first breath. Suddenly, the words “miracle” and “awesome” and “breathtaking” sounded pale and trite and too weak. It was an event that, for me, was too big for words.
The Bible says, of the birth of Christ and the after-events, “But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). Imagine, just for a moment, that you are a young Jewish girl.
In the last nine months, you have: been visited by an angel, found out you were pregnant, been rejected then accepted by your fiancé, been laughed at and scorned and mocked by your kinsman and townspeople, traveled to a crowded city, slept in a cave, and given birth to a Son. While still weak from the birthing process, you’ve been visited by shepherds who say they’ve heard angels telling them to visit you.
Yes, some things are beyond words.
Re-read the Christmas story in Luke 2:1-19; then ponder again with Mary - young, innocent, chosen Mary - the wonder and awesomeness of God’s unspeakable gift. Read John 4:10.
